How to Grow Roses

Most gardeners try to grow roses but give up because they are a fussy lot. But with the right kind of approach roses will yield to the satisfaction of the gardener

1. Choice of roses

Not every rose will grow in every climate. It is therefore necessary to pick those roses that can withstand the weather in the area where the garden is. Your local nursery will give you the guidance.

2. Soil

The soil should be neither acidic nor alkaline. It should be slightly on the alkaline side. It is important that the soil is tested before planning on planting roses. There should be some amount of porosity and for this a bit of sand could be added.

3. Grafted roses

If you go for grafted roses care needs to be taken to see that the mother plant does not give out shoots. These shoots need to be pulled out and this operation will be there only in the first one or two years.

4. Pruning

There are two types of pruning – light and heavy. Light pruning is done to cut off dead roses with their stems which is an on going process.Light pruning encourages for new buds to emerge.  Heavy pruning is done once a year when the plant is trimmed sizably for new shoots to appear. This is done around the rainy season.

5. Fertilizers

The best is natural fertilizer which is prepared in one’s house by composting wet and dry waste. Some gardeners may not have this facility in which case nurseries sell what is called ‘rose mix’ with instructions.

Roses need to be fed at regular intervals unlike any other flowers which is why many do not opt for growing roses. The expect to be fed once a fortnight.

6. Changing soil

Once a year the top layer  up to about  4”  is replaced by fresh soil – soil that has the right pH value. Soil needs to be loosened once in a way.

7. Weeding

Every garden is rich with weeds and they need to be constantly eradicated for roses to grow to their full potential.

8. Pests

Roses invite a lot of pests of which aphids are the main culprits. There are pesticides available but it would be better to have some ladybugs around that will help eradicate aphids. One can also sprinkle some wood ash that keeps the caterpillars away.

With these tools there is no reason why  a good rose cannot grow.

    • I sure hate aphids. I do not know why there are no ladybugs here.
I think the pesticides used by the government has killed off all the ladybugs while not getting rid of aphids.

    • Nice ways how to plant roses. I wish I have the talent and appetite of this. I just like and buy roses, but never desire to plant. I no longer have time to plant.

      • You can start with just one plant and when you see results you will get encouraged to go for more.

    • I've always loved to see the ladybugs in the garden, even before I knew how important they are to the plants. It's possible to buy them at nurseries, if the local population is too low. They will help care for the roses, and many other plants in the garden :)

      • May be you could observe about the role they play in your garden in getting rid of pests, specially aphids.

    • We have 2 roses plants in our garden and one of them got hit badly by pests. We had to prune the rose plant and after a few days we saw new branches growing up.
Thanks for the other points also. I will take a note of the ones that concern me.

    • "Roses are red, my love.... Violets are blue..." These lines from a popular song which I used to sing in my teenage years. Not only I love to sing a song with roses, but I do love roses. My wife has several kinds of roses grown in her mini garden at home. Last Saturday, she bought another kind of roses. They are small but look beautiful. I don't have any idea on how my wife has grown them. I don't have anytime to help her. But I do appreciate her roses.

      • Who can forget Jim Reeves. That is my favourite song and I hum it so many times when I stroll in the garden (lol)
Your wife must be a successful gardener if she has succeeded in growing roses.

    • Ever since I was a young kid, I always loved the look of roses. They always have me a smile on my face and that somehow just bring about warmth, no wonder when men need up they will always bring their wives or girlfriends rose flowers because they know they will ease down the anger that is building up within. Anyway I have always been a fun, and I always tried to plant rise flowers but I didn't know that the soil should be in a particular state, this is something new for me. All the things that you have mentioned above sound very promising. Though I cannot say that I would do all these things not unless I am growing a garden full of roses for sale, otherwise just for my personal use I don't think I have that time really. That's a lot of time. My mum once had some rose flowers at the front side of the house and they used to do so well yet she didn't even spray them or put manure in them. I tried that and the first time they came out very well, but when I tried the same method elsewhere they all backfired and withered. So I didn't try it again till today.

    • Growing rose is the best hobby because roses enhance the grace of home and garden that is why everyone should grow roses at homes. Growing roses at home sometimes proves a good and profitable business on earth and some men are doing it are rich due to growing rose business.

Would you like to become a Rosarian? Roses, symbolic of love and beauty, have been growing wild and in gardens for thousands of years. To grow gorgeous roses, it's important to choose varieties that grow well in your region and take measures to help them thrive season after season.

Some roses grow better in certain regions than in others. When you're choosing what type of rose to grow, take some time to research the specifics of your growing region, then look for roses that have characteristics you find appealing.

Once you've picked out the types of roses you want to plant, decide in what form you want to buy them. Bare roots are the roots of roses that are planted directly into the ground. You can also buy young roses that have already been planted in a small pot, and transplant them to the ground or another pot.
